Reciting the Serenity Prayer at the weekly Celebrate Recovery Large Group meeting I attend each week helped me get a grip on change and what I do and don’t have control over.

The Serenity Prayer begins with asking God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

In recovery, on the human journey,  we come to learn there are only 3 things we have control over.

  • Acceptance of the way things are
  • Actions which control my destiny
  • Attitude that fuels hope

Picking up The Difference Maker by John Maxwell is helping me forge a positive attitude when change comes my way.

Here is some gold from Chapter 6.

  1. Change will happen whether you like it or not.
  2. Without change there can be no improvement.
  3. Change always costs you something, be willing to pay the price.
  4. Change must happen within you before it can happen around you.
  5. It’s never too late to change.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, decide what you are NOT willing to change…faith in God or my commitment to integrity, family, generosity, and belief in people.
