Two days before I moved from the Sacramento area to South Santa Cruz County, I got a call from the owner of Pathways Recovery, a men’s detox and residential recovery center in Roseville, near Sacramento. I was asked to design a Spiritual Development and Guidance element for their men’s residential program. “I’m moving 150 miles away in two days” I said. “That’s OK, we’d really like you to help us” they replied.
We began a four month trial that consisted of weekly group meetings. One day a month I travel to Roseville. The other three weeks we video conference. So far it’s working well.
Our first meeting I shared my recovery story that created rapport right off the bat. One guy said “If you told us you were a Pastor right off I would have written you off. But you told us at the end and I’m stoked,”
It’s a simple spiritual element we’re using. It’s called The Bible.
Last night, for the first time in their lives, four men read verses from the Bible out loud! They are on track to read a chapter in Proverbs each day. Each week we talk about what they’ve read.
At first the idea of being 150 miles away seemed impossible. Not with God. I’m beginning to make this my new mantra:
It always seems impossible until it’s done. ~ Nelson Mandella
