A few of us will backpack a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail this July. It is one of the Deep Adventures I lead. These adventures are designed to take us deeper with God, ourselves, and others.
We are reading The Way of the Heart by Henri Nouwen as soul preparation for the adventure. The premise of the book asks “What does it mean to be a Christ follower in this day and age characterized by despair, epidemic cancer, isolation, superficial living, conflicting priorities, off the charts stress, the political wasteland?”
I fear I too have become seduced by this day and age, and wonder, perhaps as you:
“How can we expect to remain full of creative vitality, of zeal for the Word of God, of desire to serve, and motivation to inspire?”
“Where are we supposed to find nurture and strength?”
“How can we alleviate our own spiritual hunger and thirst?”
Nouwen charts a path with ancient wisdom and practices in the chapters that follow the Prologue.
